Deborah: The Wise Judge and Prophetess

Judges 4-5

Deborah was a wise woman who loved God with all her heart. God chose her to be a judge, the first woman judge in Israel. A judge was a leader who helped people solve problems and learn what was right. Deborah sat under a tall palm tree, and people came from far away to ask her for help. She listened carefully and shared God’s words with them. At that time, God’s people were being treated badly by a leader named Sisera. The people cried out to God for help, and God spoke to Deborah. God told Deborah to ask a man named Barak to lead the people into battle. Barak felt afraid and asked Deborah to come with him. Deborah said she would go with him. When the battle began, God helped His people. Sisera’s army became confused, and they were defeated. God gave His people a great victory that day. After the battle, Deborah and Barak sang a beautiful song to thank God for saving His people. Because of Deborah’s courage and leadership, the land had peace for many years.
